Salvamare law approved !
History was made this month as the Italian Senate of the Republic approved The Salvamare Law, allowing fishermen to bring in plastics accidentally caught in their nets and deposit it in designated depots ashore.
Before the new law, fishermen had no choice but to throw plastic back into rivers and the sea to avoid being accused of transporting illegal waste. In the future they will receive rewards for the plastic they bring in.
The new law will also provide for the installation of plastic collection systems at the mouths of rivers, educational campaigns, desalination plants and more.
